Founded in 1815, the esteemed pottery we know today as Royal Doulton didn't become royal until 1901 when Edward VII issued the Royal Warrant allowing for the name-change. Some two decades later, specifically between 1923 and 1927, the company produced this handsome and weighty (three inches tall but nearly two pounds) match striker and holder. Three features make this example especially desirable: its flawless condition, its very seldom seen back stamp, and its uncommon cobalt blue center.

Except for the slight darkening you see on the upper parts of the striker (where most people would light their matches), the piece is in very good condition--not so much as a flea bite to the base. After the Royal Warrant, the back stamp changed to include a crown beneath the company's signature lion logo; however, between 1923 and 1927, the crown inexplicably disappeared. This is one of those pieces. Finally, the rich cobalt blue of the rim and interior provides a heavenly center to the earthy stoneware body.
